Challenge

A head coach has two opportunities per NFL game to challenge a call by the referee on a play. He may request a review by video evidence. This process is called a challenge in football. For a challenge, the Head Coach throws a red flag before the next snap or kick, which he carries with him. The team must have at least one timeout remaining and the last two minutes of the half must not have elapsed.

Results of a Challenge

If a check by the referee does not show a clearly different result, the call has passed before (Ruling on the field stands). In addition, the team loses a timeout for disputing the decision. If, on the other hand, the review results in the Head Coach's perceived outcome, a challenge is successful. The team keeps the timeout and the call of the referees is changed to that (call overturned). If a team is successful with a challenge twice in a game, it receives an additional third challenge.

Reviewable and non-reviewable plays

A challenge can only be checked for certain decisions. For example, it is not possible to have a pass interference, which is often a point of contention, reviewed. Below is a rough overview of the decisions on which a play can and cannot be reviewed:

Possession of the ball (completion, fumble)

  • Contact/touch of the ball with a player or the ground
  • Decisions regarding the position of the ball or player on the goal line, field boundary or line of scrimmage.
  • Space gained or lost
  • Number of players on the field during the snap
  • Game administration (penalties for fouls, positioning of the ball, game clock, etc.)

Non-reviewable decisions:

  • Incorrect whistle for a play
  • Hitting/fisting or kicking the ball
  • Intentional Grounding
  • Ineligible receiver of a pass attempt
  • Penalty touching of a receiver
  • Point at which a loose ball crossed the sideline and went out of bounds
  • Illegal Blocking
